Condemning Violence and Reaffirming the Value of Diversity in Australia

The Freemuslim organization, Center for De-Radicalization & Extremism Prevention ( CDREP ) unequivocally condemns the recent act of violence that took place in Sydney, where innocent civilians lost their lives during a peaceful public gathering. Any attack targeting civilians—especially those motivated by hatred or extremist ideology—represents a direct assault on the shared values of humanity, coexistence, and dignity.

Australia has long been recognized as one of the world’s most diverse and inclusive societies. Nearly one-third of Australia’s population is foreign-born, and close to half of all Australians have at least one parent born overseas. This diversity has been a cornerstone of the nation’s social strength, economic growth, and cultural richness. Immigrants and minority communities have contributed profoundly to Australia’s innovation, workforce, arts, and civic life, helping to shape a modern, pluralistic society.

The tragedy in Sydney reminds us that diversity alone is not enough; inclusion is essential. When individuals or communities feel marginalized, unheard, or excluded from civic participation, social cohesion weakens, and the risk of radicalization increases. Freemuslim firmly believes that increased diversity reduces discrimination and extremism when people feel valued, included, and empowered to participate constructively in society.

There should be zero tolerance for extremism or extremist behavior in any country, regardless of political system, religion, or ideology. Violence rooted in hate must be rejected universally and unequivocally. At the same time, suppressing dialogue or silencing grievances does not foster peace. Sustainable harmony requires open channels of communication, platforms for constructive engagement, and a shared commitment to mutual respect.

Moujtaba Akhwand, Director of Freemuslim, emphasizes that preventing marginalization is a shared responsibility between governments and citizens. Societies thrive when people are encouraged to become positive contributors rather than disengaged critics, when concerns can be expressed safely, and when differences are addressed through dialogue rather than force.

Freemuslim operates domestically and internationally with the aim of bridging the gap between governments and citizens, promoting peaceful coexistence among people of all faiths, genders, and nationalities. We are committed to understanding the root causes that isolate minority communities and to advocating for policies and social frameworks that foster belonging, dignity, and shared responsibility.

As Australia mourns this tragedy, we stand in solidarity with the victims and their families. We reaffirm our belief that peaceful coexistence, inclusion, and dialogue are the strongest defenses against hatred, and that diverse societies—when nurtured with fairness and empathy—remain humanity’s greatest strength.
