Dear President Obama,
We at FreeMuslim Association are writing you on be behalf of the millions of Americans that profess Islam. This weekend there will be anti-Islam rallies in multiple cities around the nation under the banner of the “Global Rally for Humanity”. These rallies, which will occur on October 9th and 10th, plan to gather people together outside of mosques to express anger at Islam.
While we understand and respect the right of all to freely express themselves and assemble in this country, we would like to raise our concern for the safety of American mosques and Muslims. Global Rally for Humanity clearly encourages hatred towards Muslims and that is should not be accepted under your leadership. Although freedom of speech is part of Americas’ rights, the safety of American Muslims at their places of worship should be a paramount priority, and we see it as an essential aspect for the protection of religious liberty.
Unfortunately, around the world, the religious liberty of Muslim groups are not respected and upheld. Bombings at mosques and shrines have killed scores of Shia Muslims each week. Even in this country, Islamophobia has manifested itself in the vandalization of mosques and the harassment of their attendees.
It is for this reason that we at FreeMuslim Association request that you urge local authorities to take the necessary safety precautions to ensure the protection of mosques during these rallies. In this current political climate, the concern for the safety of Muslims has been the highest since September 11, 2001. We thank you for your consideration of this message and we hope to hear from you soon.
