Freemuslim’s Message on the International Day to Combat Islamophobia
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”
— The Holy Quran
For centuries, misconceptions and misrepresentations have distorted the true image of Islam, leading to misunderstandings among people of different faiths and cultures. This has contributed to the unfortunate rise of hostility towards Islam in many parts of the world.
Despite the clear teachings of Islam—documented in the Holy Quran, the authentic traditions of the Prophet (PBUH), and the guidance of the Imams of Ahlulbayt (AS)—which emphasize peace, compassion, and moral excellence for all humanity, certain actions carried out by extremists and those who misunderstand the faith have fueled negative perceptions.
Recognizing this global issue, the United Nations has designated March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, highlighting the need to address prejudice and misconceptions about Islam and its followers. However, Freemuslim believes that the term “Islamophobia” itself is problematic, as it instills a sense of fear in the reader’s mindset. Instead, we recommend using “Anti-Islam” to accurately describe actions or sentiments against the religion. The term “Islamophobia” carries an inherent negative weight, subtly suggesting that Islam is something to be feared, rather than a faith of peace and coexistence.
On this important occasion, Freemuslim (The International Organization for Nonviolence) calls upon leaders, policymakers, and influences in the Muslim world to take meaningful steps in countering misconceptions about Islam. It is essential to implement policies and initiatives that showcase Islam’s true message of peace, tolerance, and coexistence. Furthermore, it is crucial to clarify historical misinterpretations and separate them from the true essence of the faith.
Islam’s core teachings—rooted in the Quran, the Prophet’s example, and the wisdom of Ahlulbayt—promote nonviolence, unity, selflessness, and mercy. It is our collective responsibility to reflect these values in both words and actions, fostering a world built on mutual respect and understanding.
Freemuslim remains committed to spreading this message and working towards a world free from hatred and discrimination.
