International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism

Two different viewpoints on the subject of countering terrorism shed  light on the complexity of the problem. On the one hand, groups like Freemuslim emphasize the ineffectiveness of using terror and violence as political instruments. We contend that using force merely serves to expose a failure to have meaningful conversation, impeding the possibility of a peaceful conclusion. In our opinion, the way forward is through productive discussions that demand compromises from all parties and eventually promote social development and understanding.

In contrast, the continuance of terrorist attacks causes more destruction and feeds a circle of tragedy and suffering. Despite widespread censure, victims frequently experience marginalization, silence, and contempt for their rights. Many victims of terror attacks struggle to recuperate physically, psychologically, and socially as a result of the attacks’ aftereffects. While some Member States are able to meet the long-term requirements of these victims, others struggle to offer all-encompassing care.

In this context, the United Nations appears as a key player who promotes the rights of terrorist victims and fosters international collaboration. The organization attempts to provide assistance, develop capabilities, and create networks to support both Member States and victims’ associations by coordinating activities with the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. By launching these programs, the UN hopes to encourage a shared commitment to a more secure and peaceful future while ensuring that terrorist victims receive the consideration, assistance, and rights they are due.

Freemuslim emphasizes two crucial elements in the battle against terrorism: the prosecution of offenders and the adoption of strict legal measures to discourage and prevent subsequent acts of terrorism. Freemuslim seeks to establish a deterrent effect that can help to lower crime rates in society by pushing for legislative changes and the adoption of new laws that impose the worst penalties on repeat criminals. This strategy emphasizes how crucial it is to hold people responsible for their conduct and provide a legislative framework that encourages a safer and more secure environment for everyone. A comprehensive plan to counter terrorism can be created, addressing the various challenges, by combining constructive conversation, victim support, international cooperation, and legal reform.
